Death & Disability Member Action

Members have been doing a great job to date in expressing their disgust and anger at the tactics of the NSW Government attacking their Death & Disability scheme and entitlements.

We are now asking members to take further action and email the members of the NSW coalition parties to show them we really mean business.

By forwarding the email below, we will send a loud and clear message, that the Officers of the NSW Police Force, will not ‘go quietly’ whilst under direct attack.

 

I’m sending you this email because I want you to think about what your Government’s proposed changes to the Police Death & Disability Scheme would mean to NSW police officers.

Police are the ones who run into a situation when everyone else is running away. They put themselves in the firing line and often get beaten, punched, stabbed, threatened, verbally abused, stalked, choked and shot at for their efforts.  Police officers also see some brutal things – things they will never be able to erase from their memories no matter how hard they try.

Police officers give everything to this state. That’s why we need a Death & Disability Scheme that offers police real protection should the worst happen.  NSW Police officers have been let down by your government.  The Police Association has always been willing to negotiate changes to the scheme and your Minister has misrepresented our position.  

Police agree the scheme needs to be reviewed thats why in 2009 my Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commissioner of Police to do so.  That MOU states that if agrement cant be reached the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) should assist.

There is no need to completely destroy what we currently have. All that does is hurt our seriously injured officers even more.   


I urge you to rethink your policy and come back to the negotiating table.  If we cant agree then the IRC is the place for it to be resolved.


Don’t kill our Death & Disability Scheme.

SYDNEY, Feb 16 AAP - Legislation aimed at tackling gun crime in Sydney won’t crack down on crime families, the NSW Opposition says.
Under proposed changes introduced to state parliament this week, people who fire at a dwelling as part of organised criminal activity will face a maximum jail term of 16 years.
Anyone who directs the activities of a criminal enterprise will face a maximum of 15 years behind bars, while directing the activity of a criminal group will attract a maximum jail term of 10 years.

NSW oppn wants more cops against gun crime

SYDNEY, Feb 15 AAP - More police should be deployed in Sydney’s gun crime hot spots, NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson says.
His call comes after a 67-year-old woman escaped injury when a stray bullet hit her Granville home in Sydney’s west about 11.30am (AEDT) on Tuesday.
The bullet penetrated a wall and lodged in an upstairs bathroom.

NSW police to patrol public transport

SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - NSW police will take over security on trains, buses and ferries under a state government proposal to create a new Police Transport Command.
The move will also slash transit officer numbers to just 150.
Under the three-year plan, announced by Premier Barry O’Farrell on Tuesday, the new command of 610 officers will take over security for the entire public transport system.

Taser call after prison officer bitten

Police have long been armed with Tasers, now prison and court officers want them too, after a prisoner bit an officer in Newcastle.
The court officer is recovering after being bitten in the Newcastle Police cells on Monday.
A 25-year-old prisoner sunk his teeth in near the officers rib cage, and the ABC has been told it required some force to make the man let go.

Gang laws urgently needed: NSW opposition

SYDNEY, Feb 8 AAP - The NSW opposition wants tough anti-bikie laws introduced after a man drew a gun on two men with links to the Hells Angels during a street fight in Parramatta.
Police said the 31-year-old man was walking along Phillip St on Tuesday afternoon when he crossed paths with a Hells Angels member and an associate.
It’s alleged an argument broke out and the man produced a pistol, which he fired at one of the bikies, but the firearm did not discharge.

Police need more power on guns: Opp'n

SYDNEY, Feb 6 AAP - The NSW Opposition has called on the government to give police more power to combat gun crime, after a man was repeatedly shot in the leg in Sydney’s southwest overnight.
Police and emergency services were called to Christian Road in Punchbowl at 12.45am (AEDT), where a 29-year-old man had been shot three times in the leg.

Sydney policeman bashed - four men charged

Four men have been charged after a policeman was allegedly grabbed in a headlock and bashed in Sydney overnight.
Police were called to a hotel on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst at around 1.50am (AEDT) on Sunday, following reports of a brawl.
While on their way to the scuffle, a group of men allegedly confronted the officers and one of the men charged at them, police allege.

Feb 3 AAP - Premier Barry O’Farrell will have blood on his hands if someone is killed in the next shooting in western Sydney, opposition leader John Robertson says.
More than two dozen community leaders held a crisis meeting on Friday at Greystanes, in Sydney’s west, to come up with solutions to stop the recent spate of shootings.

SYDNEY, Feb 2 AAP - NSW Police are waiting on a response from the DPP after requesting it appeal Sydney magistrate Pat O’Shane’s decision to throw out a case in which a paramedic was assaulted by a patient.
Ms O’Shane last month suggested that ambulance officer Christopher Martin didn’t like “blacks” before dismissing charges against his alleged assailant.

NSW police tattoo ban absurd: Opposition

SYDNEY, Jan 29 AAP - A proposal to ban people with tattoos from joining the NSW police force is absurd, the state opposition says.
Under a proposal being drafted for Commissioner Andrew Scipione, prospective police recruits with tattoos would be knocked back and current officers with tattoos would have to conceal them.
