Our Services

The Police Association's innovative staffing structure supports the activities of branch officials and activists while providing a high level of specialist expertise to members. Multi-disciplinary teams comprising an organiser, industrial officer and legal services staff are responsible for members in defined geographic regions. The members of these teams are also part of specialist divisions and are supported in their work by the Administrative Services section as well as the Research & Resource Centre.
The Information Organising Centre has been set up to provide a quick and professional response to member's enquiries. Members can also email inquiries during afternoon and night shifts and have a documented reply available on their next rostered shift.

It should be remembered that Executive members are employed as police officers and consequently may not be available to assist on all occasions. Should you require urgent assistance or advice, please contact one of the staff members of the Association.


Industrial

  • Preparation of claims for improved conditions and salaries
  • Negotiations in pursuit of claims
  • Preparations of briefs of evidence in contested claims
  • Appearances before Industrial Tribunals
  • Information on conditions of service, entitlements under Award or agreements
  • Resolution of industrial disputes
  • Enforcement of award of agreement conditions
  • Industrial safety
  • Equipment and uniforms
  • Industrial research

Legal

  • Applications for legal assistance;
  • Promotion and appeals;
  • Employee Management;
  • HOD and workers' compensation applications and appeals;
  • Information on all aspects of promotion, training, career development, transfers etc.;
  • Drug and alcohol testing;
  • Critical incident response.

Field services

There are four organisers and one full-time Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator and a Commissioned Officers' Liaison Officer. Each of the organisers is responsible for a defined geographical area. Their role is to:

  • Assist in the establishment of branches and provide support to officials in terms of organising members;
  • Attend meetings of branches;
  • Make regular visits to police stations and other places where members perform duty;
  • Respond to issues regarding occupational health and safety and police properties;
  • Assist in recruiting new members;
  • Liaise with local management and assist branches resolve industrial disputes
  • Liaise with other unions regarding the role of police in industrial disputes;
  • Coordinate legal and welfare assistance to members involved in critical incidents
  • Develop and coordinate state-wide campaigns;
  • Industrial safety
  • Equipment;
  • Uniforms;
  • Motor vehicles.

Information Organising Centre (IOC)

  • Provides a state-wide service to members between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday on 9265 6713, 9265 6736/EN 57160, email: info.centre@pansw.org.au
  • Answers members' inquiries regarding basic industrial, legal and member benefits issues and provides information via email or fax;
  • Identifies organising opportunities
  • Refers complex inquiries and organising opportunities to appropriate team members or specialist staff.

Administration

  • In conjunction with the Treasurer and the management team be responsible for the financial management of the Association and management of the Associations property portfolio.
  • Applications under Association welfare schemes, death benefit scheme and scholarships.
  • Subscription income.
  • Applications for the waiving of subscriptions.
  • Arrangements concerning Conference and Executive meetings; correspondence and other records.
  • Circulars and other aspects of communication with members.
  • Association rules, conduct of branch business.
  • Ballots.
  • Police entitlements other than industrial and legal.
  • Membership records and branch lists.

Research & Resource

  • Identify major issues in policing and undertake appropriate research for all Association divisions.
  • Program and project evaluation.
  • Contribute to the development of position papers relative to policing issues.
  • Provide briefing notes to staff and general membership outlining trends and issues in policing.
  • Facilitate seminars and workshops including Association Conference.
  • Liaise with other Associations, research organisations, trade unions and professional organisations.
  • Provide educational packages on policing and Association issues.
  • Maintain a Resource Centre of book and non-book material in the areas of policing, industrial relations and OHS.
  • Publish the New South Wales Police News, Policing Issues and other Association publications.
  • Maintain and develop Association website.
  • Provide resources to members undertaking studies.
  • Conduct training courses for members and staff.
  • Identify training needs of the organisation.
